Demanding, but Worth It

The course was highly practical and extremely effective. It requires a serious commitment, but the effort is absolutely worthwhile. The instructor is attentive, professional and highly engaging, with an excellent ability to keep participants focused. Nothing is left to chance—it's clear that every session is the result of extensive experience and careful preparation. I would highly recommend this course, not only to scientists but also to anyone working in science communication.

Highly recommend

The instructor was great. Very knowledgeable, but also entertaining, essentially exactly what you want from a trainer. At first, I was put off about the assignments in advance and the videos to watch, but completely changed my mind. I understand their purpose and value to the course. On of the best workshops I have attended at the DKFZ.

engaging, relevant and a good learning opportunity

the workshop was very engaging and the practical examples from my own field made it more applicable than other courses I had visited in the past. The online material is a great resource to get back to when in need. Thank you for this great learning opportunity!

Helpfull and Encouraging

The online courses were well structured and presented very good, so it was easy to follow and stay tuned. In the practical session all skilss were solidified and practical examples heleped to learn most efficiently.

Well structured course

The online course set a great foundation for the in person session. The little exercises during the online part helped especially, there could have been even more of them in my opinion. Establishing guiding principles and backing them up with psychology and science (Gestalt psychology, System 1/2 by Kahnemann, etc.) supported both remembering and using them later on.

has improved my visual communication

Great, systematic approach to better visual communication in science. There is online learning material for general introduction into the topic, plus special sessions for slides, posters and grants - all in bite size videos. The workshop with live feedback from peers and Jernej is incredibly helpful - don´t miss it! You will see visual science communication through different "eyes" 🙂

I wish Jernej’s workshop was mandatory!

“I was honestly quite sceptical about Jernej’s workshop, since there is a lot of bullsh*t surrounding design and visual communication. However, I was super impressed.
His online courses are information dense, but also packed with loads of good examples, and he shows often how certain principles work in practice. I was not a novice in graphical design, but I still found the course super useful. I would definitely recommend it for fellow scientists, at any level! In fact, I know a few professors who could definitely benefit from it… It should be mandatory!
He also gave us the log-in to the online website for a year, and I’m super grateful for that. I will definitely use it as a resource often!”

The duration was perfect, the exercises were very well structured, the tips and tricks were extremely useful! “The course was surprisingly useful! Often these courses can be very “theoretical” and hence not so useful. But I was surprised by how rigorous, clear and down-to-earth this course was. You are explained the theory behind the method and you learn through real-life applications, e.g. by discussing published material in science. Every lesson is bite-sized so it is all very easily digestible. Most of all, I appreciated picking up a language to critically talk about science visualization/communication, as well as a number of tips and tricks (and tools) which I will certainly use in the future. “I learned new methods like AAZ framework which makes it very easy to decide which material should we add in our images based on the target audience. Also, other techniques and tricks disccused in the course developed the sense of creating a proper flow of a concept. “I think the course was really useful for us. Personally, it helped me to see some mistakes I make when doing slides and realize how I can improve them to make more intuitive for the audience. What I liked the most was when Jernej was analyzing our slides and giving advice, since we all had more or less the same background and we usually make similar mistakes.
